The Childcare Business Initiative (CBI) was established in direct response to the critical childcare shortage in Manhattan, Kansas, and surrounding communities. Data from Child Care Aware® of Kansas shows that only 48% of local demand for childcare is being met, with over 1,300 additional slots required to support working families. Neighboring counties face even greater deficits, revealing a regional crisis in childcare availability.
How CBI is Different
Unlike traditional childcare centers, CBI operates as a business development program. We provide eight fully equipped childcare suites, each independently run by local business owners. Through this innovative model, providers receive business training, mentorship, and operational support, ensuring they are well-prepared to run successful, independent businesses once they transition into the community.
Impact and Capacity
With the capacity to provide 96 childcare slots, CBI addresses this shortage while fostering a stronger childcare ecosystem. Slots include:
- 16 infant slots (0-12 months)
- 32 toddler slots (12 months – 2½ years)
- 32 preschool slots (2½ - 5 years)
- 16 school-age slots (6-12 years)
CBI’s model ensures each business can thrive within the program and transition smoothly into the broader community after 12-18 months, continuing to alleviate the childcare shortage long term.
